The best new restaurants in Toronto braved the dire dine-in landscape of 2020 to bring us Sicilian seafood and Filipino kamayan feasts to-go. Indoor dining anytime soon is a stretch, but here’s to hoping the city’s newest arrivals stick around for the good days ahead.

Here are the best new restaurants in Toronto.

Gusto 501

Gusto 501

The multi-level sister restaurant of Gusto 101 does it all. The all-day Italian cafe opened pre-pandemic in Corktown serving wood fire pizzas straight from the oven, tagliata on the ground floor Trattoria, and a cocktails menu.

Atomic 10

St. Clair West’s recent addition is a neon-hued takeout spot for tostones, including an epic patacon maracucho with fried chicken inside. Tacos come loaded with favourites like carne asada and more experimental ingredients like beer-battered cod in a pad thai sauce.

Mark's Pizzas

3

Mark’s Pizzas

A business that began as a pizza-making hobby expanded into a tent on the driveway. Now, pizzeria owner Mark Alousis has his own takeout spot on Old Kingston Road where he makes all his thin-crust pizzas on a rotating menu from scratch.

Bernhardt's

Bernhardt’s

The cute Dovercourt digs that once housed Julie’s Cuban is a now a rustic rotisserie chicken joint. A former chef at Bacchanal and Noce brings locally-sourced meats and veggies to the table. The obvious highlight is the whole chickens with gravy boats on the side.

Conzo's

5

Conzo’s

The team behind Bloordale Village’s elbow-to-elbow spot Sugo decided to open up a pizzeria right next door. Thick-crust 17-inch pizzas include toppings like Ezzo pepperoni and cremini, with garlicky sauce on the side.

Tala

6

Tala

The co-owner of St. Jamestown’s king of kamayan, Tinuno, brings the full feast right to your door. The tiny takeout counter is packaging up hefty pizza boxes full of garlic rice, silogs, lumpia, and tilapia on banana leaves.

Amal

7

Amal

Lebanese cuisine has a new home near Bay and Bloor. Toronto’s nightclub king Charles Khabouth partnered with Chef Rony Ghaleb last year to launch this high-end restaurant serving labneh, pricey pistachio kebabs, and shaabiyat for dessert.

Pompette

8

Pompette

Replacing Little Italy’s corner mainstay Capitol is this French restaurant specializing in seasonal dishes. A beautiful outdoor space makes for peak patio dining (when it’s permitted again). Make your way slowly through this 300-strong wine list.

Dova

9

Dova

Specializing in Sicilian seafood is this restaurant that pays hommage to its neighbourhood, Cabbagetown, formerly known as the Don Vale (hence its portmanteau name). The people behind Ardo have also stocked this Carlton Street restaurant with pantry goods.
